Oakland community breathes sigh of relief after 3 arrested in violent Montclair robbery, shooting
Relief rippled through Oakland's Montclair District on Friday as police announced the arrest of three individuals connected to a violent daytime robbery and shooting that rocked the normally quiet neighborhood.
Business owners and residents expressed gratitude after Oakland police credited swift arrests to high-quality security footage and critical witness information. The incident occurred on April 2, when a local businessman was followed from a Chase Bank in Montclair and ambushed not far from his home.
According to investigators, the suspects observed him withdraw cash. As he reached the 1900 block of Cortereal Avenue, a violent struggle broke out. Police said one suspect, identified as 19-year-old Kelvin Davis, allegedly shot the victim multiple times before fleeing the scene with a stolen stack of cash.
Surveillance cameras from the Montclair Village Association played a vital role in the investigation, capturing the frightening aftermath.
In footage shared with CBS News Bay Area, a masked man is seen sprinting away from the scene with a wad of cash in his left hand. Two bystanders can be seen urgently moving a stroller out of his path as he escaped to a white getaway car, which was later confirmed to be stolen.
"We were working with the police after the incident occurred to provide video and imagery to help identify the suspects," explained Daniel Swafford, Executive Director of the Montclair Village Association.
The footage and community cooperation helped police track down and arrest Davis on Wednesday. Due to a prior robbery conviction, Davis now faces over 40 years to life in prison if convicted of the new charges.
"The victim is still in the hospital and healing, and hopefully, will be released from the hospital today. So I just want to first lift up the victim in this matter and hoping he can get home soon," said Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson.
In addition to Davis, police also arrested 21-year-old Keyjuanne McGhee, who is facing up to seven years in jail. A third suspect, a teenage boy identified as the getaway driver, will be charged in the juvenile court system. He was arrested within 12 hours of the robbery.
Jones Dickson also revealed the gravity of the incident, stating, "The gun that was used is automatic. So the fact that he was not killed is just by the grace of the universe."
The victim, a Montclair resident and local business owner, has not been publicly identified for safety reasons. Friends and colleagues said he has a long recovery ahead due to the severity of his injuries.
"He's a local resident, an Oakland business owner, and a Montclair community member," Swafford said.
Swafford also issued a stern warning to would-be criminals.
"If you come to our small business district to do crime, you're going to be held accountable. You're going to be identified. We've got cameras throughout the district," he said.
Davis and McGhee made their first court appearances on Friday and faced multiple charges and enhancements. Police also confirmed that one of the three suspects is linked to a recent homicide in Oakland, but declined to provide further details.
As the investigation continues, the Montclair community remains shaken—but unified.
